In the last four years, the Trump administration viewed certain Chinese companies – especially telecommunication technology companies, such as Huawei, and those offering social media apps, such as TikTok – as threats to U.S. national security because they could collect large amounts of data on American citizens and potentially share it with the Chinese government.
In the last week, the Biden administration has asked a federal court to delay a hearing on whether TikTok should be banned in the U.S. as the White House studies Trump’s previous executive orders to reassess the policy. Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal and South China Morning Post report that ByteDance, parent company of TikTok, is shelving plans to create a partnership with Oracle and Walmart that would have created a new company to oversee TikTok’s American operations, as was preferred by Trump (see: The Debate Over Trump ‘Ban’ of TikTok, WeChat). Chinese military incursions into Taiwanese territory have raised tensions in the region. China sent 15 military aircraft into Taiwanese airspace between mainland Taiwan and the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands in the South China Sea on Sunday, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said. A total of six J-10 fighters, four J-16s, two SU-30s, a Y-8 reconnaissance aircraft and two Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft, were sent by China, the ministry said in a statement.
