The United Kingdom has ordered London and other parts of southeast England into lockdown as a contagious new form of the coronavirus damages the country.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Saturday a fresh stay-at-home order for parts of the country because of a new variation of Covid-19 that appears to spread more rapidly. There is no evidence that the new strain is more deadly or resistant to the vaccine already distributed to 350,000 people in the U.K., said the nation’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty.
The new restrictions target holiday travel specifically, restricting the number of households that can gather and the days during which they are allowed to do so. “It is with a very heavy heart I must tell you we cannot continue with Christmas as planned,” Johnson said at a press conference Saturday.
