UK Watchdog says Instagram will Curb Hidden Advertising by Influencers

Instagram has agreed to measures to crack down on hidden advertising by so-called influencers on its photo and video platform, Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority said Friday.

Influencers with thousands of followers can earn large fees from companies to promote a product on Instagram.

In what the CMA described as an important behavior shift by a major social media platform, Facebook Ireland, which operates Instagram in Britain, has committed to a package of changes. Read more…..

The U.K.’s advertising authority is cracking down on Instagram influencers who don’t reveal that their posts are sponsored. Sixteen social media stars, including singers Ellie Goulding and Rita Ora, have agreed to clearly identify paid posts. Celebrities who don’t comply can face legal consequences, including heavy fines or potential jail time for violating U.K. consumer law.
